The Plant that Holds the Flowers
By Claudia
You are my husband and I’m your wife
You are the center of my life
I don’t know what to do without you near
So, let me explain something, so it’s clear
Our children are like flowers,
They will also be special to me
They’ll come and they’ll go, and visit when we’re old
But even flowers need stems to help them grow
Jasmine, Roses or Gardenias.
How fragrant the smells!
But even the most delicate buds or the most beautiful flowers
Will not make me forget the branch that keeps them there.
The hardest thing for me has been
Wanting to have my children near
Feeling like there’s more, but not being so sure
And having to wait and see what flowers there may be.
As Newlyweds, everything was wonderful.
Love notes and such were much more plentiful.
Fresh love, we had just decided, to be invested heart and soul,
Never doubting the intensity of our feelings could only grow.
Like a little seedling, using all its stored strength.
A sprout excited to wiggle and expand,
Exploring the soil around it
Deciding where to make a stand.
With just the two of us, yet preparing for more
We lived in the moment, seizing freedom while we could
From California to the Bahamas, enjoying our holidays.
Making memories in Hawaii or just up the canyon a little ways.
People say to keep the fire burning;
And don’t forget to express your love every day;
Remember to go to church and read your scriptures;
If you want forever to stay this way.
Finally, it seems, we had found a good pace.
We know just when we need to get away
And when it’s okay to let days run into days
Now everything we do, feels comfortable and safe.
A plant, when it is established enough
Having plenty of sap in its stalk
Is ready to give some blossoms
The love it so desperately wants
Quite a few years have gone by
And I’m not surprised to say
I’m still happily married to you
And that’s how I want it to stay
So when children come to test our strengths
Our commitment to each other or our faith
I cannot forget the “us” we’ve created
While some flowers are taking shape
Like a plant that grows from seed to sapling
Our marriage has been a lot like it
And will soon be tested by wind and rain
But our roots will only grow deep again
We’ll continue to create some sunny days
Hoping prized flowers will come our way
I know they will smell sweeter still
Mainly because we had to wait
So, I hope you can see that I love you forever
Even if I appear distracted
Working hard to grow our precious garden
For we are the plant that holds the flowers.
